The 1965 Shelby Daytona is a classic race car with the pedigree of a world class race horse. The Shelby Daytona was fathered by the legendary Carol Shelby. The project was set into motion to knock Ferrari down a notch or two. Realizing that the Cobra had severe drag issues due to its open cockpit design, Shelby went back to the drawing board to solve its aerodynamic flaws. The open cockpit caused several issues including a decrease in almost 2mph top speed compared to the Ferrari.
To catch up to Ferrari, Shelby started the 65 Daytona coupe project. The coupe, of course, solved drag by adding a roof as well as some more aerodynamic body panels. Even though the car is a born and bred American race car, only one of the six originals were finished in the U.S. the other five were sent out to Italy to be finished. The original car won over 10 Gt class events, and could reach 185mph in 1965. Finally, the original car which was first sold for a meager $12,000 was sold for over $1.5 million.
Our Daytona is a Factory Five replica with some serious modifications. The original car came with a fair sized 289 ci or 4.7L V8 motor, but Jay and the guys at AMS have some crazy plans for this build. They will be bringing this beast to life with a 5.0L Coyote motor which put down an impressive 412 hp & 390 lb·ft from the factory. However, that power isn’t enough for this build! AMS decided to throw a Procharger on it for good measure, and this Daytona should be putting down well over 600 whp when all is said and done. With a T56 transmission, and a curb weight under 2,300 lbs this car will be a monster on the street and at the track. One thing is for sure, our celebrity athlete will have a hard time keeping this thing straight!
Check out this episode of Menace Minute to get more details, and clues as to who this celebrity athlete might be!
